What is IC Card and how to use it?



When traveling for the first time in Japan, it is difficult to calculate the right fare from one station to another, especially when you are transferring the train. It is one of the troubles that international students face. The solution to this problem is to use an IC card.

What is an IC card?

The IC card, printed as ICOCA and pronounced "ic o ca do,"  is a prepaid smart card used in trains and buses to pay fares. IC cards can also be used in vending machines, convenience stores, supermarkets, shopping malls, etc. But it is mostly used in the transportation sector.

 

Where can I buy an IC card?

 It is not difficult to buy a new IC card. It is available at train stations, bus information centers, and ticket machines. It costs 2,000 yen for the first time, of which 500 yen is a deposit and 1,500 yen is usable. It can also be recharged at the ticket machine. It is just like a prepaid card—recharge and pay.

 

How do I use an IC card?

When entering the station, touch your IC card at the gate; when getting off the station, again touch it at the gate. it will automatically deduct the fair from card. When buying drinks from a vending machine, select the drink and touch your IC card at the machine.

 In bus touch it at the counter next to driver when getting off the bus. 


What is Teikiken?

Teikiken is a commuter pass provided by train to travel between two stations. When you have to travel frequently between two places, it is advised to get a Teikiken. With Teikiken, you can travel frequently between two places without worrying about the fare. Teikiken is added to the IC card. It is valid for one month. You have to renew it every month. you can get Teikiken at train station easily.
